Does Alcohol Make You Fat?

Does alcohol make you fat?,  is one question often asked by anyone who intend going on a diet or just want to maintain current weight.

Not all alcohol is created equal. Alcohol for consumption comes in various types with different level of alcohol content and of course different impact on the body.  The three major are beer, spirits, and wine which also come in several types.

The problem with alcohol and fat is that alcohol contains a great deal of sugar and is calorie dense. This sugar quickly turns to fat inside our body.  That alcohol induced fat clings to our belly, thighs, arms, and all body parts. It isn’t true that alcohol triggers belly fat than any other part of the body.  Every individual has his or her own genetic makeup which determines which part of the body is more susceptible to fat accumulation.

In general, men gain more weight in the abdomen, so it is likely that alcohol would cause belly fat for men. But it is not different from any other fatty food. Women mostly add fat in the hip area, so alcohol will not cause great deposit of belly fat. However, it will still add more fat overall.
Since alcohol is calorie and sugar rich, and doesn’t take away your hunger, it’s unfavorable to weight loss; particularly if you’re desirous of a flat stomach or six pack abdomen which requires an overall low body fat percentage.

Alcohol makes you fat only if you drink too much of it. If you want to lose body fat, the recommendation is to cut down your alcohol intake to 1-2 drink when you go out. That should be enough to enjoy yourself but still keep your body fat down.
